Around the Storage Block

By Calvin Zito

NetApp is taking a piece of truth and misrepresenting it in a press release.  On March 11th, NetApp isused a press release with the following headline. “NetApp Named 2009 CRN Channel Champion“. Yes that is true; they did receive a reward from CRN in the Network Storage Category. It’s the next piece that’s misleading.  “Honored as the Top Vendor in the Network Storage Category” stretches the truth.  The subtitle “the Top Vendor” makes it appear to the quick reader that NetApp owned this category exclusively after all it says “the top vendor” and not “a top vendor”.  Even the content in the release misleads people into believing the same.  We decided to check it out so went to the CRN ChannelWeb’s site 2009 CRN Channel Champions Awards.  When we got to slide #39 we found that CRN said “NetApp nabbed the Financial Performance trophy for Network Storage”.

I’ll be honest with you, I really don’t know what this award is for but it didn’t sound like it was what NetApp wants to lead you to believe. So we went to the next slide #40 and found that CRN said “HP picked up the victory for the Network Storage category overall, along with awards for Support Satisfaction and Technical Satisfaction.”   We also won the 2008 award for the overall category but note that we didn’t put out a press release either time.

So you be the judge; from your perspective was NetApp’s statement as “the Top Vendor” in the Network Storage Category” fair and accurate?  Never in their press release do they mention that they won the financial performance trophy.  It seems to me that NetApp stretched the truth just a bit here as it was HP who actually picked up the victory for the Network Storage category overall, along with awards for Support Satisfaction and Technical Satisfaction.  I don’t know what the guidelines are from CRN in terms of what can be said in a press release but all I can say is shame on NetApp and their PR agency for misrepresenting themselves and their award.

What kind of backup you need?

For years now, we have learned to develop our business using computers and advanced technologies. Even though computers have turned out to be an immense help, they have also contributed to data insecurity and difficult protection for information that is vital. The last affirmation was especially valid for those of us who are regular enterprise users, those who need the Internet to transmit information, while taking advantage of advanced PC or laptop backup.

Using a computer on a regular basis has taught us that such technologies need to be taken care of. This is why we have programs that improve the functionality of our computers, while adding security and virus protection. Backing up a computer or a laptop is no longer a new concept; on the contrary, every day more and more people are becoming interested in laptop backup solutions. There are also millions of people (including enterprise users) who have not discovered yet the advantage of  enterprise laptop backup ; they suffer each day from loss of valuable data and they should be informed about the existence of such innovative solutions. Online Data Backups

Backing up and protecting data should be something that every business or individual strives to do.  Data is very important, especially for businesses or individuals who make a living using their computers.  If you have never looked into backing up your files or haven’t backed them up before, you should really look into it before it is too late.

Among the many ways to back up your files are online data backups.  Online backups are great for businesses, as they will protect your data.  You can think of this method as being a server and a host, as the company stores your information over the Internet.  You can log in at anytime, and access your data.  If your hard drive crashes, you can easily access the information you need without having to wait until your data is recovered by a specialist. Tips For Data Recovery

Anytime your hard drive crashes or you lose your data, you’ll need to turn to data recovery to properly restore your information.  Data recovery is something most computer users are familiar with, as a majority of us have had to turn to data recovery at some point in time.  Even though hard drives are becoming better and better, they are still mechanical and will always encounter problems.

The first thing to do, before any problems happen, is to always back up your data.  If you create backups of your information, you’ll be well prepared in the event of a disaster.  This way, even if your hard drive cannot be repaired and the data is lost forever, you’ll have the back ups to continue going as normal.  If you didn’t make back ups, you’ll find the situation very traumatic when you discover that your data cannot be recovered.
