Server 2008 R2 to launch with Windows 7
Posted by admin in Techno News on February 24th, 2009
Microsoft has hinted that Release 2 of Windows Server 2008 may launch alongside Windows 7.
Several of the new features in Server 2008 R2 will only work with Windows 7 client PCs, including the Direct Access and Branch Cache features we highlighted last week.
With R2 due to be released within the next year, it raises the distinct possibility that Microsoft will time the launch to coincide with Windows 7, which is expected to arrive early next year.
“From a developer’s perspective, there’s a real synergy between them (Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2),” said Bob Visse, senior director of the Windows Server Marketing Group, in an exclusive interview with PC Pro, before adding: “we’ve not committed to releasing these products together.”
Visse claims the company is taking great care not to throw too many new features into Release 2 of Server 2008, having only released the full version of the OS in February this year. “We try and limit the amount of times we touch the core OS,” Visse claimed. “Customers have told us they can only digest a major release within that timeframe (every three to four years).”
“It comes down to trying to control costs,” he added. “People are looking to save costs wherever they can.”
Online Data Backups
Posted by admin in Data Server, Other Categories, Server tools on February 20th, 2009
Backing up and protecting data should be something that every business or individual strives to do. Data is very important, especially for businesses or individuals who make a living using their computers. If you have never looked into backing up your files or haven’t backed them up before, you should really look into it before it is too late.
Among the many ways to back up your files are online data backups. Online backups are great for businesses, as they will protect your data. You can think of this method as being a server and a host, as the company stores your information over the Internet. You can log in at anytime, and access your data. If your hard drive crashes, you can easily access the information you need without having to wait until your data is recovered by a specialist. Read the rest of this entry »
Securing Your Computer System
Posted by admin in Other Categories, Server Security on February 20th, 2009
Today, more and more people are using their computers for everything from communication to online banking and investing to shopping. As we do these things on a more regular basis, we open ourselves up to potential hackers, attackers and crackers. While some may be looking to phish your personal information and identity for resale, others simply just want to use your computer as a platform from which to attack other unknowing targets. Below are a few easy, cost-effective steps you can take to make your computer more secure.
- Always make backups of important information and store in a safe place separate from your computer.
- Update and patch your operating system, web browser and software frequently. If you have a Windows operating system, start by going to www.windowsupdate.microsoft.com and running the update wizard. This program will help you find the latest patches for your Windows computer. Also go to www.officeupdate.microsoft.com to locate possible patches for your Office programs.
- Install a firewall. Without a good firewall, viruses, worms, Trojans, malware and adware can all easily access your computer from the Internet. Consideration should be given to the benefits and differences between hardware and software based firewall programs. Read the rest of this entry »
Tranquil PC SQA-5H Home Server
Posted by admin in Server Review on February 6th, 2009
Verdict: A high price, but you get what you pay for – this is rock-solid, well-featured Home Server appliance.
Manchester-based Tranquil PC is serious about Windows Home Server: the company has impressed us before with its tiny, silent T7 appliance (web ID: 121499) and the more expandable T2 series (164685). Now it’s topped the range with the heavyweight SQA-5H.
It’s immediately visible that the SQA-5H is a departure from previous designs. While most home servers keep a low profile, the 5H is a chunky cuboid that looks like it fell out of the 1970s, especially in its optional white casing. The impression is strengthened by the blinking lights that show status and activity – and by the five drive slots, which look more like tape units than the 3.5in SATA bays they really are. The whole assembly exudes a solidity that will reassure those who remember the golden age of computing. Read the rest of this entry »
Tips For Data Recovery
Posted by admin in Data Server on February 3rd, 2009
Anytime your hard drive crashes or you lose your data, you’ll need to turn to data recovery to properly restore your information. Data recovery is something most computer users are familiar with, as a majority of us have had to turn to data recovery at some point in time. Even though hard drives are becoming better and better, they are still mechanical and will always encounter problems.
The first thing to do, before any problems happen, is to always back up your data. If you create backups of your information, you’ll be well prepared in the event of a disaster. This way, even if your hard drive cannot be repaired and the data is lost forever, you’ll have the back ups to continue going as normal. If you didn’t make back ups, you’ll find the situation very traumatic when you discover that your data cannot be recovered. Read the rest of this entry »
Axigen Mail Server 3 Business Edition
Posted by admin in Mail Server on February 2nd, 2009
There are many mail-server applications available today, but while Windows users have a number of options Linux users struggle. Sendmail is an effective mail-transfer agent, but it can be difficult to configure. So it’s good to see Axigen’s Mail Server taking the pain out of setting up an in-house mail server.
Running under Linux, Solaris or one of the BSD distributions, Axigen can scale all the way from a small office to a sizable ISP installation, supporting a large number of mail domains and users, depending on the type of licence. It supports SMTP, POP3 and IMAP services, and common email clients such as Outlook Express and Thunderbird will operate untroubled. Apart from supporting normal email clients, it also offers a webmail system. It provides customisable wrappers for the Sendmail service and can also act as a relay for selected networks. HP MediaSmart Server Review
Posted by admin in Server Review on February 2nd, 2009
From a software standpoint, MediaSmart offers a superset of the stock Windows Home Server (WHS) experience: Everything that Microsoft provides is available here as well, as you’d expect. But HP goes the extra mile by dramatically improving the out of box experience, one of the issues I highlighted in my WHS review, and adding a number of other useful features that will be valuable to enthusiasts and regular consumers alike. The end result is a server that provides all of the goodness of WHS in a package that is far more accessible to typical consumers. Let’s take a look.
Think outside the box
Setting up the MediaSmart Server is simple if time consuming. In the box, you’ll find just a few pieces: The server itself, which is disarmingly small and about the size of a six-pack of coke, a power cable for the server, an Ethernet cable, some documentation, and three setup DVDs and CDs. The server itself is a thing of beauty and worth discussing briefly: Aside from being almost comically small, it features an elegant swing out door on the front, providing easy access to its four internal drive bays. Depending on the MediaSmart configuration you purchased, two or three of these bays will be open for expansion, and you can actually hot-swap new SATA drives into the device. Yes, you can do so while it’s running. Tres elegance. Read the rest of this entry »
